Managing Conflict - Where to Begin?
Tiffany's Tip of the Month Tiff's photo
Conflict is a normal part of life. We observe it during political debates, in international disputes, on talk shows, and on sitcoms. When we experience it ourselves with family, friends, and co-workers, sometimes we don't know how to start resolving the conflict because we take it personally.

The first step in conflict management is to identify the cause of the conflict. Although there may be many different reasons for conflict, we can categorize conflict into three levels:

    1) Conflicts over resources. Think of two children fighting over a toy. This level is the easiest conflict to resolve. If the resource is limited (one toy), then the solution usually involves creativity.

    2) Conflicts over psychological needs. On the surface, a conflict over resources (i.e. a toy) may be truly a conflict for power, attention, recognition, etc. This level of conflict is even more difficult to resolve since people don't generally reveal their psychological needs.

    3) Conflicts over values. Because values are deeply held core beliefs, resolving value conflicts is best accomplished by acknowledging and respecting the other person's values even if you don't agree with them.

For more information on conflict management, contact us for a workshop on this topic. Happy Spring!

A Workshop Worth Its Weight in Gold
Newmont Mines Gold in Project Management Workshop Newmont Logo

When we asked participants at Newmont Mining Corporation what they liked best about our Essential Project Management workshop they said:

"The interactive methods you use during the course of teaching your subjects (tools). Using a real life example as a project that everyone related to provided a high level of participation."

"I think we all got a good understanding on how to handle our projects from now on. We got a lot of useful tools that I have never seen before. We covered a lot of information and got a good understanding."

"Excellent clarification of the initiation phase. Your approach to WBS and Network Diagram was the first time I've been able to really grasp them."

"Great passion and knowledge (obviously from experience) explaining the tools that will be valuable with the various and numerous projects on-going at Newmont."

If you're interested in learning more about project management tools and techniques, please contact Tiffany Dahlberg at 720-373-2601.
