Improve Your Critical Thinking Skills
by Tiffany Dahlberg   Tip of the Month
In today’s society, we have ready access to information. With so much data, sometimes it is difficult to determine which information is credible. Because many Americans feel that they have information overload, our tendency is to filter out information, relying on a couple of sources. Unfortunately, these sources do not always give us unbiased, fact-based information. Critical thinking can help us evaluate this data, so we can make informed decisions and opinions.

Here are the top 10 guidelines for critical thinking:
1. Ask the right questions
2. Define the problem
3. Examine the evidence
4. Analyze assumptions and biases
5. Question your perception
6. Identify the word usage and style of language
7. Avoid emotional reasoning
8. Don't oversimplify
9. Consider other interpretations
10. Tolerate uncertainity
Instead of using critical thinking to defend your beliefs, apply critical thinking to foster creative thinking and be willing to change your mind.
